Touring the Langhe

by Ted Richards » Sun Jan 05, 2020 1:59 pm

Linda and I are planning a visit to northern Italy this year in May or September, including 2 weeks in the lake district and up to a week in the Langhe, I love traditional-ish Barolos, particularly old ones and I'm looking for recommendations on where to visit. We're primarily interested in Barolo, but also Barbaresco, Barbera and Roero Arneis (a recent discovery). Tentative list (the first three are my favourite Barolos) is
  • Giacomo Conterno
  • Bruno Giacosa (provided I can find someone who'll convince them to let us visit)
  • Marcarini
  • Aldo Comterno
  • Giuseppe Mascarello
  • Bartolo Mascarello
  • Roberto Voerzio
  • Vietti
  • Giovanni Almondo for Arneis
  • Angelo Negro for Arneis
We also plan on visiting some enotecas, tentatively
  • Enoteca La Vite Turchese
  • Enoteca Regionale del Barbaresco
  • Enoteca Regionale del Barolo
  • Voglia di Vino
and restaurants (good food, but not super trendy), tentatively
  • La Piola
  • More e Macine
Any comments? Any we shouldn't bother with, or must visit?

Also, any place to pick up older Barolos at a decent price?

Well, if you are going to the area, you need to visit the Produttori del Barbaresco.

From my trip in 2012, two highly recommended restaurants:

all’Enoteca (Chef Davide Palluda), Via Roma 57, Canale, Tel. +39 0173 95857, http://www.davidepalluda.it . Creative cuisine at reasonable prices.

La Ciau del Tornavento, Piazza Baracco, 7 12050 Treiso (CUNEO), Tel. +39-(0)173-638333. http://www.laciaudeltornavento.it . Expensive, but worth it. Amazing food and a view to match...

Will post some winery rec's later

Wineries, also from that visit in 2012, those posted below combined fine wines with gracious hospitality:

Bruno Rocca for truly outstanding Barbaresco

12050 Barbaresco, Tel e Fax +39 (0) 173 635112
http://www.brunorocca.it

Giovanni Manzone - great classic Barolo
Via Castelletto 9, Monforte d'Alba – Piemonte
Tel/Fax: +39 0173 78114 - info@manzonegiovanni.com
http://www.manzonegiovanni.com

And two others for interesting expressions of Barbera or Nebiolo

Great variations on Barbera

Fine Nebbiolo di Alba
