Tasting the Past: One Man's Quest to Discover (and Drink!) the World's Original Wines
by Kevin Begos
I really enjoyed this book. It's a fascinating look at the origin of wines, via DNA, breeding, history, rare varieties.
Kevin Begos isn't a wine writer or wine expert but a journalist. He was in Jordan covering a conflict when he drank an Israeli wine made from local varieties from his hotel minibar. This wine so intrigued him he later looked up Oxford Book of Wine which said there weren't any local varieties in Israel (After contact with them he got the next edition updated). He finally visited the Israeli winery to taste the wine ….
He went to the site of Leonardo d'Vinci's vineyard where they've excavated to find the varieties grown then and are replanting, Georgia for the birthplace of wine, speaks with DNA experts.
Some of what he discovers will probably be known to experts like readers of this forum, but over all this is a very readable book with clearly separated chapters by a professional writer and journalist expert in teasing out a story, examining it and querying inconsistencies.
It's on Kindle.
