A romantic vacation to North Italy started out on the wrong foot when I left my Kindle on the plane. The worst place to lose anything because it’s dead center in a No Man’s land where the airline and the airport have both been telling me in broken English to go talk to the other party. It was time to upgrade anyway and I think the ebooks are recoverable, but it sucks being stuck in the middle of three books and no access to them.
The crappy karma evened out. I have our dining and wining itenerary worked out once we reach Piedmont but I was worried about Stresa. I was sure it was going to be tourist trap hell and it is, but somehow I found a very fine establishment, Vicoletto, which has a great wine list in addition to excellent food. And they had the following by the glass:
Traversa, Barbaresco, Ca nova, Riabot, 2013
Tar, dry roses, dry cherries, a gaminess half way between leather and truffles, tame tannins that are not sleek or modern, just well refined, with no loss of edge or focus. Wonderful. Top class complexity and breed.
