WTN: 2009 Koehler Ruprecht Saumagen Spätlese Trocken R

by Rahsaan » Sun Oct 20, 2019 9:35 pm

Have been holding onto this bottle for a few years and debating when to open. I suppose I could have waited longer but it was pretty darn delicious this weekend, so am not shedding any tears other than those of joy.

As expected, a lot was going on. Golden straw fruits that take on many many detailed shades (lemon, quince, apricot and persimmon were a few that came to mind) all the while balancing savory nutty and fresh lively presentation. The texture is no slouch either, so tender gentle and delicate, yet spherical, complete, layered and harmonious in the mouth.

Great match with herbed crab cakes, roasted mushrooms, broccolini and yellow peppers, and basmati rice.

Lots of winning going on.

Ten years post vintage is a pretty solid choice.

That's what I figured. And I am often skeptical when people talk about these wines *needing* ages and ages of cellar time. But, the perils of only having a few bottles is that you don't want to waste your shot! (And sure, in an ideal world I would have lots of these, but they are not exactly cheap or easy to find)

I have an 09 Auslese R that I might wait a little bit longer to open. Depending on how tempted I get!

Thanks for notes. I don't think I've ever had a Koehler-R Riesling, just reds and Weissburgunder. Sounds like I should remedy

I don't have the broadest exposure. A handful of the R Trockens, which are generally pretty special and a bit pricey (around $100). I've also had some of the Spatburgunder (planning to open one this weekend) but have never had any of the off-dry wines. Too much wine too little time!

I never had a batting average better than .500 with KR. Eventually I gave up. The bad bottles were a blast of kerosene with no fruit. The good ones were complex and enlightening, though.

Interesting to hear about the mixed experiences. I haven't had tons of KR wines, but they've always been delicious.

And one week later I went down the status hierarchy but still had lots of fun with the 2016 Koehler Ruprecht Pinot Noir kabinett trocken. A nice mouthful of luscious dark fleshy fruit but retains fresh juicy crisp definition. The flavors lean in that earthy vegetal spätburgunder direction, but not too much and the berry burg elements remain dominant.

Nothing complex but lovely fun. The type of wine I love to pop open, drink and relax, which would therefore be perfect for entertaining. Unfortunately, am not sure how much of a crowd pleaser this would be for my non-wine-geek set. But maybe I underestimate them and should give it a try.
