WTN: Oh my!

2002 Claude Branger, Muscadet Les Gras Mouton:
Unripe pineapple, white grapefruit, flowers and lime skin with a hint a vanilla that shades into nutmeg, all riding on an ocean of intense, complex minerality; tightly coiled at present but the makings are so remarkable that one senses the quality from the first sip; fabulous cut, intricate aromas and flavors, beautiful focus and a presence in the mouth that is all but forever. It should be said that I love Muscadet, believing good examples to be the best QPR white wine in the world and one of the most food friendly. But this takes my delight to new heights and its potential is such that, at peak, it would not surprise me if this was the best white wine I’ll ever taste – of course, that remains to be seen, because this obviously needs another decade or more in the cellar. Imported by Vintage ’59, 12% alcohol and about $14; worth a lot more. Profound.
Best, Jim

After all the pink Grigio stuff here, nice to get back to a real wine (ooops). Everytime a forumite posts a Muscadet note, I get real twitchy!!! We have Musar Rocks(from Otto), Malbec Hounds from you-know-who...we have to find something original for this Muscadet fellow!!

Some interesting notes on your winemaker, via google, Jim. Not a estate I have come across before.

Jim, your descriptions never fail to entice me. Last time it was the Arbois, now I feel like I just have to try this. You're making it very difficult for me to stick to my new year budget!!

Oh, but if you could drink as well as he does for the prices that he does, you should be sticking to a very fine budget indeed.

Yes I saw that. I left CA for London and he did the reverse commute..

Just received a case of wine today from RS Wines, am excited to drink them as the operation has quite some interesting selections. But for the most part am looking forward to my trips to France.. :)

I need a primer on muscadet. I love them, my wife finds them a little too ordinary. What do I do? Teach me the way of the moose?

We are big fans of Muscadet, particularly with white fin fish. Haven't seen Jim's find around here, but from what is available we enjoy Chateau de la Ragotiere. We can get it and a penny back from a ten spot. Yum!

I think you'll find all the names you need to know via a search in the archives.

Or just buy everything currently in stock at Chambers.

The first involves too much work, the second involves too much travel. (Not that they weren't good ideas. Heck, I would love to travel to the Loire and discover the stuff first hand.) Unfortunately I'm a lazy (and poor) American. Isn't there a button I can push to have all the information at my finger tips? I mean besides reading all the Florida Jim notes. I do that already.

You picked the wrong time. This week was the big wine fair at Angers where you could have tasted all the Muscadet under one roof. But, there's always next year. Or individual winery visits.

Isn't there a button I can push to have all the information at my finger tips?

Typing Muscadet in the search engine does require pushing more than one button so..

You might also try google.

Ah, but alas - I impulsively bought 2 bottles of Casanova di Neri Tenuta Nuova 2001 Brunello di Montalcino based on WS naming it their wine of the year for 2006, and am set back a couple of months in my overall budget now. Silly me

I want to do the Loire when it's warm as I also want to visit the historical sites there. I just finished teaching my 10th graders a unit on the Hundred Year's War so maybe I can write off the whole trip.
