So some clever guy has created a brand that bottles not by winery name or grape but by appellations of our great state. It's a clever gimmick, and the wines so far have not impressed me, but these two are successful.
2016 Drink Washington State Chardonnay Welcome to Columbia Valley
Pale yellow, unfiltered mild cloudiness, no apparent oak. Not terribly deep or complex, but offers fresh and lively apple flavors with a sweetly pleasant green note not unlike iceberg lettuce. Probably some whole cluster fermentation in there.
2016 Drink Washington State Pinot Noir Lake Chelan
Was surprised by how good and varietally correct this is (have not had much success with WA pinot noirs). Ample cherry flavors with a bit of sassafras and bramble. Great texture too: plenty of mid-palate richness without laying on the oak and a warm finish. I didn't think pinot noir like this was possible up here. But Lake Chelan might be the place to do it, at least in good years: they get hot days in summer but the nights are always cool, so grapes are slow to ripen--they never pick earlier than October.
