2003 Domaine Dujac Gevrey-Chambertin
Purchased on an impulse to drink with friends while watching those Indianapolis Colts kick all forms of ass on Sunday. I chilled it to about 58 degrees F and then let it set, minus cork, for 45 minutes before pouring.
Aroma: Rich dark fruit and a cracked window's worth of freshly turned earth.
Taste: Ripe and elegant. Fruit way forward, but not overwhelming. Black cherry, ripe strawberry, cassis, some earth/wood mixed in there. The wine was quite fresh tasting, but not too young tasting (if that makes sense). Long, smooth finish.
A very, very good, if rather expensive, 1er Cru. The wine is extremely tasty and ripe right now. I really can't see it lasting for too many years. Not that I can afford more bottles to find out if age is kind to them anyway. After making the purchase I almost had a panic attack from my severe case of buyer's remorse. That remorse disappeared immediately upon tasting. I'm not a wine snob, however, I will confess to only pouring the wine for the attendees who would appreciate it. We did not put it out for the masses to gulp. They didn't seem to notice. As a bonus the Gevrey coated the tongue of nary a single Bears fan.
