Gamay Decree

by kasey.dubler » Tue Jul 30, 2019 6:34 pm

So some of you may know that Duke Philip the Bold decreed that all Gamay should be ripped out because it was a "disloyal variety" way back in 1395. Well that decree was on July 31st 1395, so tomorrow, the 624 anniversary of that seems like a good day to open a bottle!

Happy drinking my friends...

Good enough!!

2017 Malivoire Gamay Niagara Ont.

Enjoyed on recent camping trip to eastern slopes this side of Jasper. Clear ruby, some thought almost pink? Berry aromas..strawberry, cranberry, floral almost. Easy drinking, low to medium bodied. Fair acidity, quite juicy overall. Not much for tannins, thought would be nicely chilled. Some spice noted and blackberry to the forefront. Good effort as usual, look for the Small Lot.

All hail Philip the Bold, Kasey! I didn't open another for the day (which is also my wife's birthday), but I'll raise a glass of the Domaine Diochon 2017 Moulin-à-Vent Vielles Vignes that I reported the other day in Wine Focus:

I always liked how indignant that decree reads.

Such an odd thing to decree. I was meaning to open another 2006 Clos de la Roillette because the last one I had seemed like it might be on the downslope.
