Asimov has an interesting take on wine criticism and reviewing.

Yup, Bill...an interesting if a bit muddled article, I thought. The article left me a bit puzzled about what he was calling for.
It’s important to note that the article is about wine criticism, not wine writing in general. I thought what he was calling for was exactly the kind of wine criticism that JonBonne used to do in the SFChron. Make it more about educating than criticism. Yet Jon’s writing was widely reviled by many folks.
The early days of ConnoisseursGuide was more akin to what Eric’s calling for...educating. Now it’s more just a compendium of wine reviews and scores, which is why I no longer subscribe. Their reviews are some of the best in the business...but not what I’m looking for.
