WTN: Dorks do Chablis

by Jenise » Wed Jun 12, 2019 7:09 pm

Mostly Chablis and a few interlopers, in reverse order we drank them:

2008 Gilbert Picq & ses Fils Chablis Dessus La Carriere Chardonnay
Tim's. Still showing lots of acidity. On the palate, saltine crackers and gooseberries.

2009 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py Gamay
Eric's. Vivid strong dark garnet color with dark plum, black cherry, geranium, anise and a shot of tomato leaf. More profound than the youthful wine but otherwise doesn't show its age much at all compared to other recent reviews. Outstanding.

2013 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru La Forest Chardonnay
Eric's. What a way to end the night: everything you hope for from Dauvissat.

2016 Domaine Bernard Defaix Chablis 1er Cru Côte de Léchet Chardonnay
Vicki's. Citrus and green apple and overall a bit simple at this point in time.
Utterly pleasant but tough job following the Droin, and it needs more time.

2013 Jean-Paul & Benoit Droin Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre Chardonnay
Mine. Great nose: spearmint, cardamom and chamomile. On the palate kiwi fruit, macintosh apple, cinnamon. Magical complexity but not heavy. Pretty much everyone's WOTN.

2011 Thistle Wines Chardonnay Dundee Hills
Tim's. Can easily imagine, especially given the vintage, that based on a last taste a few years ago it's owner might have thought "this could pass in a Chablis tasting." But it doesn't now: relatively full bodied, and the alcohol shows a bit. Quite decent, especially for longevity, just didn't fool anyone.

2014 Domaine Besson Chablis 1er Cru Montmains Chardonnay
Mine. More savoury than sweet, with canned pears, green apple and saltine crackers. Very minerally, lots of tension. Leftovers showed even better the next day.

2005 Daniel-Etienne Defaix Chablis 1er Cru Les Lys Chardonnay
Gabe's. Bright yellow, salty, meyer lemon and nectarine fruit, almonds, raw mushroom. All that made it a bit new worldly, but it was nonetheless much admired, especially for the vintage.

2007 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru La Forest Chardonnay
Eric's. Bright yellow, looks aged. Mild oxidation with aged gouda cheese notes.

2012 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume Chardonnay
Tim's. Floral nose, classic minerality on the palate. Tepid fruit, soft but not flabby.

2014 Domaine Pattes Loup Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux Chardonnay
Mine. Better than previous bottles and last of five I purchased in Chablis. Bright medium yellow. No oxidative notes on nose or palate but no Chablis typicity--just super tropical. Passion fruit leads with pineapple and lemon and the sweetest finish of the day. Leftovers the next day: no fruit, sour.

2015 Guy Robin Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons Chardonnay
Vic's. A bit shy at the moment, dominated by flint not fruit. Give it time.

2015 Kirkland Signature Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay

Eric's. Served blind and in spite of the fact that it followed a show-stopper no one guessed it to be a lesser quality wine--didn't even show the extra ripeness of the vintage. Extremely presentable and correct for Chablis. If it were still available I'd stock up.

1992 Far Niente Chardonnay Napa Valley
Gabe's. Intense and classy, most likely new world and over 10 years old. Ripe fruit with Vit B6, Lemon Pledge and saline. But complex, with excellent balance and acidity. And get this: it had been passively stored for at least the last ten years of its life, no idea before that. The owner wasn't into wine at all. Retasted at the end of the night and no change. An amazing, apparently immortal wine.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

What a great tasting! Chablis is one of my absolutely favourite white wine types, alongside Loire chenin and riesling from several sources.

I'm interested to see that only one of those seemed to suffer from oxidation. I had a big disappointment of that sort with most bottles of a dozen of Fourchaume 1996 Dom. Chantemerle which I aged hoping to emulate a superb 20 year old 1979 which the vigneron let me taste when I was buying. William Fèvre doesn't have a good reputation on premox but my 2007s bought when passing through Chablis were all clean, indeed delightful, perhaps because I didn't age them long enough for the problem to appear :D .

I had a 2014 Dauvissat La Forest the other night that left me cold, and 2014 is a tip-top vintage.
