WTN: Oh to live on Sugar mountain

by David M. Bueker » Mon May 20, 2019 9:25 pm

2013 Bevan Cellars Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley (5/20/2019)
Massive wine, but miraculously not out of balance. It’s a little too sweetly fruity on entrance for my taste, but it round into form in the mid-palate. The finish is the best part, as the sweet fruit picks up more focus and structure. This isn’t really my sort of thing (it’s much bigger than the Ontogeny), but it’s very high quality.

I'm fairly certain I'll never taste one of those. I now own some Ontogeny because I got it for $98/ea but both I and anyone I know hereabouts is unlikely to shell out for the big(ger) guns.

Having now had three of them, I don’t think they are worth the upcharge, as the Ontogeny is so good.

Are we talking red or white and what is the blend if not 100% varietal?

These are cab-based reds under discussion, though Bevan does make pinot noir, Sauv Bl (brilliantly so IMO) and heavy chardonnays.
