WTN: Bordeaux, Saar, white Beaujolais

by Dale Williams » Mon May 13, 2019 3:43 pm

Before going to a Leo Kottke/Bruce Cockburn double bill at Tarrytown Music Hall, we took some friends to dinner at Bistro 12 across the street. I had octopus and braised rabbit with mushrooms, had brought along the 1998 Ch. Dalem (Fronsac), which I double-decanted just before leaving house. Black plum fruit with a little mocha, mostly resolved tannin, round soft acids. Medium bodied, not especially complex but fun and drinking well. Great value (under $10 at recent auction). B

Friday was scallops with chorizo and corn, and the 2017 JP Brun/Terres Dorees Beaujolais Blanc. Light, sweet pear and apple fruit, moderate acids, easy and clean. B

Saturday was grilled pave steak, radicchio, and summer squash, plus salad and a sweet potato.Wine was the 1995 Ch. Meyney (St. Estephe). Good color, still a bit of tannin. Cassis fruit, midbodied, just a little cigarbox. Holding on but not very complex. Certainly a drinkable claret but without that extra verve that made the Meyneys of the 80s one of my favorite Bordeaux values. B-

Sunday was a heritage (Duroc I think) double pork chop, braised red cabbage and Asian pear, udon noodles, and salad. Wine was the 2015 Van Volxem Alte Reben Riesling (Saar)
Hint of RS, ginger, orange peel, grapefruit and pit fruits. Nice B/B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Wow, Bruce Cockburn! I'm wondering where the lions are.

Love the Brun blancs. But "easy, clean", neither bad, but at the same time doesn't sound like you found this to be a particularly exciting vintage of it...or am I reading too much into it?

That’s pretty much all that wine ever is.

I disagree, David. "Easy" isn't always a compliment.

True, it’s not.

That being said, I have never found the Brun Blanc to be profound. “Easy” makes sense to me. Different strokes.

There's a lot of space between 'easy' and 'profound'. But I'm making too much of this--he gave it a B, it's a decent wine. Done.

I did like it.
But maybe a little softer than my favorite vintages
It's never profound, but always good value.
And Bruce was great (I prefer Lovers in a Dangerous Time and Rocket Launcher to Lions, but enjoyed all 3)
