WTN: Recent Stuff

2014 Sueño Profundo Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District
This is a great little (because I didn't pay much for it) bottle of Napa Cab. Has excellent typicity: black cherry, cigar box, cedar. Good mouthfeel, long finish. Bought a case, wish I'd bought two.

2016 Biohof Pratsch Sauvignon Blanc Ried Kittel Weinviertel

Funky nose with a fairly fruity mid palate that feels like it's going to end sweet; it doesn't, but it comes way too close. No resemblance here to SB as I know it.

2014 Caves Saint-Pierre Châteauneuf-du-Pape Le Fiacre du Pape Red Rhone Blend
Not oxidated like previous bottle. In fact, a very good bottle with good gamey Rhone notes and grenache up front. Neat buy for $20 at Trader Joe's two years ago.

2017 Domaine de la Madone Beaujolais Le Perréon Gamay
Grapey with an offputting whiff of vinegar on the nose. In fact, that's what's going to become of this bottle--in about four months, it will be a finished vinegar.

2003 Querciola Barolo Sorì Nebbiolo
Full bodied with gravelly tannins so lacks elegance, but there's good secondary development and it went very well with last night's cheese ravioli and spicy tomato sauce. Good bottles should continue to age well.

2015 Long Shadows Wineries Syrah Sequel Columbia Valley
Bright dark red fruits and polished textures, no pepper notes like others report but none of the McClaren Vale-ish lactic notes of the early years when John Duval actually had a real hand in it. Has the stuffing to cellar through 2030.

2014 Woodward Canyon Charbonneau Walla Walla Valley Red Bordeaux Blend

Pretty and brawny at the same time. That is, soft and feminine on the surface but muscular underneath with complex evolved fruit that shows old vines wisdom in so young a wine. The vineyard is not long for this world, though, and this will be one of the last Charbonneau's Rick makes. I bought three.

2017 Toil Oregon Pinot Noir Rosé Willamette Valley
From Chris Higgins (son of Leonetti) new Oregon pinot project. Has firmed up nicely since we last tasted it 8 months ago, the fruit's calmed down and the acidity shows better.

2013 Jonata Winery Todos Ballard Canyon Syrah Blend, Syrah
Full bodied, complex, elegant. Excellent.

2012 Boudreaux Cellars Syrah Wallula Vineyard Horse Heaven Hills
I think we caught this one sleeping: prominent acidity needs more time to settle out, and the fruit is dialed back from what I tasted at the winery last summer. Hold.

2010 Sparkman Cellars Syrah Untamed Yakima Valley
Inky purple with sweet saturated fruit and a milky, lactic note. Though nine years old now no notes of aging (sadly), and although called 'untamed' there's nothing wild (sadly) here--it's just a new world fruit bomb waning into its later years. Drinkable, but not exciting for my preferences.

2015 The Walls Vineyards Stanley Groovy Red Mountain Touriga Nacional blend
Benefits (what doesn't) from an hour of decanting to lose some primary grapey flavor, but settles into a fruit forward, complex wine with lots of stuffing. I paid $40 for my first Stanley 2013, this for $20 at Costco is a steal.

Yup....the SauvBlancs from the Weinviertel and BurgenLand can often be a strange expression of the grape.
I've found more consistent ones from the SudStiermark....but they're difficult to find.

Styria is ground zero for SB in Austria.

But it’s still SB.

I love SB and I appreciate 'different' wines, which is why I bought this. But this tasted closer to riesling (albeit a weird one)!

What is going on with Charbonneau Vineyard? I've always been a fan of these wines...

I have consumed a lot of Sueno Profundo Cabs. from 2009 on and they have all been enjoyable. I have not tried their Cab. from Stags Leap AVA however. I'll look for it.

The owner's going to rip it out. Or has already, don't quite remember what they told me. But Rick Small doesn't own it so has no control over it. I too have long been a fan. It was the very first Washington wine (before I moved here) that really turned my head, a dinner guest brought an 86 to dinner circa 1999, and I just loved it. When we came to Bellingham on a house hunting trip, our first restaurant meal was at a local café/wine store (did you ever know Mike Peterson?) and chose a Charbonneau to accompany our meal. It's just, in my mind, firmly rooted to the essence of what's possible in this state.

Jim, this is the only one I've had. But it's spot-on for old school Napa cabernet, really love it. Paid $27 for it from Last Bottle or WTSO (who I no longer deal with).

Sad to hear about the Charbonneau, this is the first I've heard of vineyards being ripped up in Washington. I know it's been a problem in California, and even parts of the old world, but never heard of it in WA, sad... Charbonneau was also one of my first experiences with WA wine that I thought was great. I was always a fan of a lot of their entry level stuff for the price point, but never thought any was great, then tried a bottle of this and some old Andrew Will that changed my mind. Sadly I have none of this left and only 1 or 2 bottles of old Andrew Will.

As far as Mike Peterson, I do not remember him, but likely crossed paths at some point when I was living up there.

Kasey, Mike probably pre-dated your arrival here, if your arrival here began with your stint at Semiahmoo. Mike had a café in downtown Bham on Railroad. Sweet, shortish guy with a second-hand big guy's chef coat that came down to his knees just about and an eternally sad expression, but he could cook. His café had walls of wine by price--buy and take home, or add to your meal for cost plus $5 corkage. He was very into European wines and personally had a great collection. Then he went through a divorce, hooked up online with some chiquita in Columbia and packed it all in here to move there. From that description you'd know if you met him or not.

Yup, vines get ripped out here. That's where this state's supply of old merlot vineyards went--ripped out when the Sideways effect plummeted sales of that grape because the world outside of St. Emilion and Walla Walla didn't understand serious merlot vs. cheap bar wine. Oh, and I recall a few years back when Kiona ripped out the oldest cab franc vineyard in this state--regular consumers didn't understand cab franc, they only wanted cab sauv--to plant, get this, the grape all those dolts who didn't know what cab franc was really wanted, or so Kiona said--dolcetto! Wha-at? So yeah, it happens.
