WTN: Diamond Creek; terroir speaking?

by Tim York » Thu May 09, 2019 3:09 am

Following David's thread on California, my gaze fell on this label from a famous Californian terroirist and I pulled it out to accompany a piece of Waygu beef. Neither were like any similar products I have tasted before. The Waygu was richer and more marbled than any predecessor and the Red Rock Terrace was rounder and softer fruited and softer structured than any previous Cab. They went beautifully together.

I also have a bottle of Volcanic Hill from the same vintage, relics from a business trip to NY in the late 90s, and now need to open it soon enough to have the flavour profile of Red Rock Terrace still in mind.

1995 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Red Rock Terrace - USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain (5/8/2019)
Blind, I don't think my Bordeaux orientated palate would have recognised this as Cabernet Sauvignon. It was quite full bodied, softly fruity, more blueberry than cassis, very round, caressingly textured with moderate acidity. Shape on the palate was somewhat upfront but the finish was quite long with resolved tannins. Moreish aided by commendably low alcohol (12%). Bravo for terroir differences. Very good.

Two things:

First, I am having trouble picturing you eating a Waygu steak and drinking Cal Cab. I feel like I am on the wrong wine board! ;)

Second, Diamond Creek is an interesting fence straddler for California. The wines are not forbiddingly tannic, nor are they ooze monsters. IMO, Red Rock Terrace is the most approachable of their wines. Haven't had any recent vintages.

I'll just offer that I'm plain envious. I may never taste another Diamond Creek in my lifetime, but there's no Cal Cab I love better. Never could make up my mind which of the bottlings I liked best.

Tim, would love to. It's the part of France I haven't been to yet and most want to go to, and I've mentioned to Bob that I have a friend there!
