2017 Millbrook Tocai Fruilano

by Dan Smothergill » Mon May 06, 2019 1:34 pm

Friulano is identified with Friuli in northeast Italy where it was known as Tocai Friulano before Hungary objected to the similarity of the name to its own Tokay. Few are produced in the US so I was surprised to come across this Millbrook from the Hudson Valley and doubly surprised to see it named Tocai Friulano. The answer about the name seems to be that the restriction applies only to wines from Italy.
The wine is medium bodied with a slight pear nose. It has a pleasant minerally taste perhaps comparable to a Muscadet but bolder. The only Friulano from the US I can compare it to is one made by Ventosa in the Finger Lakes. That one has a discernible bitter almond aftertaste, typical of Friulanos from Italy, that I didn't get in the Millwood. Purchased at Empire Wines in Albany for $13.45. I'd buy it again.

Dan, Channing Daughters winery (on Long Island) also makes a Fruiliano which is nice.

It's an EU agreement with Hungary.
But unsure since it is now obsolete why American producers would want to use the term. Go drink some California Chablis. :)
