WTN: El Jaleo

by Patchen Markell » Thu May 02, 2019 5:09 pm

Two cases of ESJ arrived here this week and the first thing we tried was a Edmunds St. John 2017 Amador County Red Wine, Shake Ridge Ranch, “El Jaleo.” The hue and saturation remind me of a mountain nebbiolo, though the blend is Mourvèdre, Grenache, Graciano, and Tempranillo. The wine itself is a mysterious and engaging synthesis of delicately floral and muscularly tart red-fruited in a sort of welterweight way. Somehow a seamless combination of grip and silk. The only other wines I’ve had from this site were Dirty & Rowdy, and I can certainly recognize the affinity, but this stands on its own, and beautifully. A very impressive new direction for Steve.

It’s a really fine site. Great that Steve is getting their fruit.

Fantastic label as well.
