WTN: 2012 Dönnhoff Estate Riesling (another one for Tim)

2012 Dönnhoff Riesling - Germany, Nahe (4/17/2019)
Refreshing, bright, barely off-dry, food friendly, and just barely starting to develop some aged complexity, this is still on the young side. For about $20 it's a great value, and an pleasing dinner companion.

I recently had the 2011 version, which was a little fleshier, and notably richer due to the softer vintage, but also still very young. This one hits all the right notes for the more classically styled 2012 vintage.

FWIW, Cornelius Dönnhoff has been taking this wine closer to halbtrocken over the last several years. He and I had a long discussion about this in June 2018, and he wants the wine to be just off dry, edging to the low end of the halbtrocken scale.

I had this three weeks ago and it had plenty of fat. I don't know if I've ever had a "classical kabinett" but if the main criterion is weightlessness, then this one definitely fails to qualify. Tasty nonetheless, though I wouldn't say it has even began to flirt with maturity of any kind, but hey that's sulphur for ya. Unfortunately it doesn't matter one bit for maturation whether it's borne of fermentation or dumped in from a container.

Not sure what you were drinking. This had zero fat.

It just sounds like a completely different wine. And you may not know that Dönnhoff has wines that only end up in the US or only end up in Europe. Things get “tuned.”

Lots of Dönnhoff available at German web sellers but, as you say, they may not be the same as the one's you have in the USA. I am surprised that Dönnhoff is big enough for such tuning practices but I did hear an employee of Michel Rolland telling French TV audiences that it is commonplace in Bordeaux.

I don't take to being told how I should like my wine just because of my passport  .

Hailing from the country with the state monopoly, that's actually pretty eerily relatable. :)
