need info on whether wine is any good

by Betsy Kerr » Fri Feb 02, 2007 3:20 pm

We're not wine drinkers but we have 3 bottles given to us some years ago. I don't want to pour them out unless they're just no good. They are unopened. Is it appropriate on this forum to tell what is written on the labels and see if the wine is anything worth giving to someone who might enjoy it? Thank you.

Yes, tell us what is on the labels. It is also important to know how long they have been stored and what the storage conditions were. Also, if the wines are sealed with a cork they should have been stored on their sides to prevent the cork from drying out and spoiling the wine.

In addition, it might be useful to know how far down the shoulder of the bottle the wine is. That is to say is the bottle full, almost to the bottom of the cork, or is the wine several centimeters or inches away from the bottom of the cork?

I thought I had posted my response and wondered why I didn't get a reply. I guess my post is in the twilight zone!

I have one bottle that is dark, looks black, twist top with seal unbroken, fill line is just above where neck slopes into bottle. Label says

Maison L'Aiglon
Saint-Chinian
Appellation Saint-Chinian Controlee
Table Wine
Grand 1995 Reserve
Bottled by Grands Vins D'OC, Beziers, France
Product of France
Alc. 12% by vol.
750 mil

There is another label on the back with many words.

I have two of these: Bottle is a light green, white wine looks slightly pink, twist top with seal unbroken, fill line is just below where neck slopes into bottle. label says

Ruffino 1984
ORvieto Classico
Denominazione di Origine Controllata
Ruffino
Bottled by S.p.A. I.L. Ruffino
Pontassieve Itali 326 F/I
750 ml
Alcohol 11.5% by vol.

There is another label on the back with many words.

All bottles have been stored upright at room temperature since I received them.

I really appreciate your help! Thank you!

My guess is the St Chinian could be OK, but the other two bottles will likely be past it. You never know until you try, though...I wouldn't wait too long!

Yikes! 1984 Ruffino Orvieto? I'm guessing the St. Chinian is shot too.
Don't take a BIG sip.

Prost!

French and Italian twist top wines from 1984 and 1995! Really?
