WTN: A White & a Red O'er the Weekend...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Sep 09, 2018 4:00 pm

Tried these two Fri night:
1. LaClarineFarm al basc Albarino SierraFoothills WW (8 mo. skin contact; U/U; 11.4%; www.LaClarineFarm.com) HasnkBeckmeyer/Somerset 2016: Deep golden/burnshed bronze color; quite cloudy w/ lots of flocculent sediment; some mousey/hantavirus/earthy rather phenolic/resiny/apple cider some smokey/honeyed/orangey rather exotic/complex slight appley/apple cider nose; quite tart/acid very phenolic/resiny/cidery rather tannic/astringent/bitter bit earthy/mousey/honeyed/overripe orange somewhat exotic flavor w/ ample astringent/bitter tannins; very long rather tannic/astringent/bitter quite phenolic/resiny/piney/cidery finish; no fruit here & dominated by the phenolics; a wine only SweetAlice would love; with the spicy food, the wine was somewhat tamed down; too much mousey/hantavirus characer for my tastes. $20.00

2. OddLot MontereyCnty RW (14.5%; 80% PetiteSirah/20% PetiteVerdot; www.BeOddWines.com) OddLotWineCo/Greenfield 2016: Black color; fairly strong licorice/PS bit blackberry/boysenberry/very ripe/grapey some earthy/bit herbal rather simple/grapey nose; very soft/fat/soupy/bit porky strong boysenberry/ripe/PS/blackberry/licorice/chocolaty bit hot/alcoholic somewhat earthy/herbal bit dusty/loamy flavor w/ modest soft/ripe tannins; med.long soft/fat rather grapey/licorice/PS/boysenberry/chocolaty some earthy/loamy/herbal simple/grapey finish w/ light very ripe tannins; a rather soft/fat/soupy/porky/grapey PS that is devoid of structure or interest; overpriced at $16.00 (KK)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. OddLots: Bought this because of its eccentric/garish label. The wine is produced by SchiedVnyd from their HamesVlly vnyd, as best I can tell, though it's not shown on their SchiedVnyd WebSite.

2. al basc: When I tried this over the next two days, the nose was not so bad. But on the palate, it was unbelievably sour and the mousey/hantavirus so dominated the palate that it was undrinkable and left a dreadful mousey aftertaste in the mouth that was hard to eradicate.
I first tried this wine a yr ago:

: Med.gold bit burnished bronze quite cloudy color;
very strong appley/apple juice/apple cider rather phenolic/resiny baked/spiced apples rather complex
nose; very tart/tangy/metallic rather phenolic/apple cider/resiny some baked spiced apples bit bitter
quite tannic/apple skin quite skin-contact white flavor; very long quite tart/tangy bit bitter/apple skin
rather phenolic/resiny/apple cider some earthy some baked spicy apples quite resiny finish; no obvious
Albarino character and lots of resiny/skin-contact white character; quite an interesting/unusual/maybe
bizarre skin-contact white; needs food w/ it to tame the bitterness. $28.00
and didn't find it so bad.
Not sure what has happened to this wine, but it seems headed south in a headlong death spiral. Hard to believe that this wine would get any better.

Now, Bob....sometimes Calif Albarino can be pretty danged good. As you well know,
I'm not so parochial in my tastes in wine.
