WTN: Hogue "Genesis" Syrah 2001

by Bruce Hayes » Mon Jan 29, 2007 9:49 pm

Columbia Valley.

Very dark purple.

Deep, rich nose, with cherry, spices, black licorice and a bit of chocolate.

Judging by the "weight" of the nose, I had been expecting something fuller bodied, but it was surprisingly light and tangy. Rich cherry and raspberry fruit, herbs, red licorice, red apple tartness toward the end.

Long, tangy cherry finish.

Not what I had been expecting, but a delicious wine nonetheless.

Purchased on sale for $16.95 (Canadian).

Bruce would you call this a good "hamburger wine"? You know something that goes with the sort of everyday meal of the typical N. American kitchen?

Yes, I think it would pair nicely with a range of food.

We had it with some braised short ribs.

I hear good things about the Hogue Genesis series. Thanks for the confirmation. I will try this one out.

Their '03 Cab also drinks very nicely for the price. Wine.com had it on sale a few weeks ago for $12.99. IMHO it can go head-to-head with Cabs 3-4 times the cost.

I guess I should try the Genesis Cab. Our local University Club has recently started, and stopped, serving the regular Hogue Cabernet by the glass. I don't know why they started, but they stopped because people kept commenting that it didn't taste like Cabernet. I was one of those people. The first time, I accused them of giving me some non-descript Syrah. (Perhaps it had been open a bit too long????)

What other wines are in the Genesis line?
