Screwcap growth continuing...

by Hoke » Mon Jan 29, 2007 3:49 pm

According to a recently released ongoing study, ACNielsen, which monitors primarily chain groceries/drug/liquor retailers, reports that screwcap closures continue to grow...and sell.

ACNielsen estimated that in their segment of retail screwcaps represent $200 million in sales, with 4% of market share---but with a growth of 50% since March 2006 alone!

ACN also cited a growth in number of wines under screwcap at 66% in 2006, with 552 total (213 domestic, 339 imports).

Note: ACNielsen reports on retail sales for essentially chain grocery/drug retailers, so it represents only a portion of the market. Few indie retailers, very little of the Northeastern non-chain markets, and no restaurant/on-premises activity, etc.

Good news, Hoke! Let's hope the use of screw caps also spreads to the higher quality products. I don't want to meet a corked Mouton-Rothschild again...
Cheers, Anders

Screwtops Rule! I'll probably never meet a corked Lafite but I've met enough corked CdPs to last a lifetime.
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

We're bottling three wines under screwcap in a couple of weeks. Keeping my fingers crossed!
