Tried this relic over the weekend:
1. Mayacamas Zin LateHrvst NapaVlly (17 1/2%) Napa 1984: Med.dark color w/ some bricking; quite cedary/pencilly/oldRed fairly strong blackberry/boysenberry/Zin/ripe/licorice slight raisened/pruney some complex still alive nose; rather alcoholic/hot late harvesty/raisened/pruney some blackberry/boysenberry/Zin/very ripe bit cedary/pencilly/oldRed off-dry flavor w/ light smooth/ripe tannins; very long some alcoholic/hot/bit porty some blackberry/boysenberry/Zin/very ripe some raisened/pruney off-dry some cedary/pencilly/oldRed finsih w/ light ripe tannins; plenty of ripe fruit & still very much holding in there and not showing much signs of drying out, though kinda on the porty/late-harvesty side. $16.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. The Mayacamas LateHrvst Zin '68 was a legend in its time and was widely regarded as the "first" LH Zin. Maybe the first to be labeled as such, but both Ridge and DavidBruce produced 15%+ Zins in '68. This first LH Mayacamas came from a NapaVlly vnyd of which I never knew the name. In the next several yrs ('70??, '72, '74) they came from Kay & Ed Baldinelli's ShenandoahVlly vnyd. Not sure what vnyd this '84 came from.
This was much better than I expected it to be and not going over-the-hill yet, with plenty of ripe Zin fruit. Rather porty on its own, but wonderful with the DeerCreek creamy BlueJay blue cheese infused w/ juniper berries; an amazingly good domestic blue.

How long had you stored it? I assume the $16 price was the price back then?

That was the original price when I bought it, Peter. Probably in '86. K&L still has it arounf $35/btl.
