WTN: Maury sec and Riesling GG

by Dale Williams » Thu Mar 29, 2018 4:12 pm

Tuesday I took lunch to a friend who’s recovering from an ortho injury. With gyros, pork souvlaki, & greek salad he opened the 2015 Cabirau "Serge & Nicolas" Maury Sec. Not sure I’ve ever had dry Maury before, this was mostly Grenache with some Syrah and Carignan. Very ripe black fruits with herbs and anise, fairly low acid. No apparent oak, I wouldn’t call this super-modern just concentrated and ripe, but not a style that really appeals to me, though well done. B-/B

Wednesday was an Asian influenced dinner- lime/soy flounder, rice with furikake, bok choy with shiitakes, sesame snow peas. Wine was the 2014 Kruger-Rumpf “Scharlachberg” Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Hint of spritz on opening. Ripe almost tropical fruit, with an interesting orange cremesicle/vanilla note (though a dry wine). Good balanced, long slatey finish, fun stuff. B+/A-

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Don't see Maury mentioned often. I've had two and based on those wouldn't seek out another. They shared the same cactus-fruit spininess (grenache gone wrong?), and a little iodine too. I don't find either appealing.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Glad you liked the Kruger-Rumpf. Stefan is doing some great things with the estate.

Gets pretty hot down there. The concept of Maury sec scares me these days, but I can see how lovers of big fruit would enjoy it.
