WTN: Two From Austria...White/Red....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Mar 25, 2018 7:05 pm

Tried these two last night w/ Susan:
1. Alzinger GrunerVeltliner Muhlpoint Federspiel (12.0%; www.Alzinger.At; EB; L-N 3216/15) Unterloiben/Wachau 2014: Screwtop pops on opening, some tiny bubbles; very strong GV/white pepper/floral/spicy fairly ripe/lush beautiful nose; fairly tart bit CO2/spritz fairly ripe/white pepper/GV/spicy/bit floral light stony/mineral attractive flavor; med. some GV/white pepper/floral/spicy light stong/chalky pleasant finish; a really lovely nose but not the impact on the palate the nose promises; a quite pleasant GV but just that; the disolved CO2 distracts and makes the wine seem a bit shallow. $29.00 (KK)

2. Claus Preisinger basic (12.5%; 50% Zweigelt/Blaufrankisch; www.ClausPreisinger.At; CircoVino/Tuscon) Gols/Burgenland 2014: Very loud pop from CO2 when opened; slight bubbles that disappate; rather boysenberry/ripe/BF fairly earthy/loamy slight barnyardy/brett bit coarse/rustic nose; soft/fat ripe/lush slight black pepper/licorice fairly earthy/loamy rather boysenberry/blackberry/licorice some bretty/barnyardy flavor w/ light smooth/ripe tannins; med.long soft/ripe/lush some boysenberry/BF/earthy/loamy some bretty/barnyardy finish w/ light ripe tannins; plenty of basic BF character but a bit unthrilling and too unclean/bretty for me. $19.00 (KK)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. I generally like the Alzinger wines quite a bit. This one was nice enough but didn't rise to the level I expected.

Impact on the palate from a Federspiel? The whole point of the designation is about delicacy & refreshment.
