WTN: Terra D'Aligi Pecorino 2005

by Bruce Hayes » Sat Jan 27, 2007 12:36 pm

IGT Terre Di Chieti. From Spinelli.

Aged for six months - 50 per cent in stainless steel and 50 per cent in barriques.

A very odd wine and one which I didn't really care for.

Medium gold-yellow color.

Nose of stinky cheese.

Moderately creamy in the mouth, some banana, lemon, peppery, with a bitter streak which persists throughout the wine through the finish.

An okay wine I suppose, but it doesn't really offer much and is quite simple.

Not good QPR at $16.95 (Canadian).

Bruce,

I've had Pecorino too and completely agree with your assessment. I much prefer the cheese.

Prost!

Just a nit ... Soave isn't a grape, it is a regional wine. The predominant grape is Garganega (70-100%). Factoid courtesy of my Wine Grape Varietal Table. And, yes ... it doesn't get any respect.

Thanks Clark, good point on the Soave versus Garganega.

I guess the grape gets so little respect that I keep getting the name of the region and the name of the grape mixed up.

I think you'll find that Pecorino is a grape variety, not a wine type.

Trebbiano would be the normal white wine grape in the Abruzzo, I believe it's Trebbiano Abbruzese (I think a much more interesting variety than T. Toscano).

Thanks Oliver. Having a tough day here. Pecorino is indeed the grape. I misread a review of this wine, which suggested that Pecorino bears a resemblance to the better known Trebbiano grape. I will go back and edit my original note.
