WTN: Three Dog Night...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Jan 28, 2018 10:33 am

Posted in my finest DaveBueker & Jenise mode (two of my idols); I had these three dogs at dinner last night, so gave up & went to bed:

2. Carlisle PetiteSirah DryCreekVlly (16.6%; 58 cs) SantaRosa 2001: Very dark color w/ slight murky browning; rather alcoholic/fumey/hot some PS/blackberry/licorice some smokey/toasty/oak slight peppery/PS bit complex nose; soft rather tangy/metallic/funky quite hot/alcoholic/fumey/spirity slight PS/blackberry/licorice/peppery some raisened/overripe/pruney slight oxidized/bitter flavor w/ light drying/astringent tannins; pretty much devolved into a hot/alcoholic/overripe/stewed mess; pretty much undrinkable. $38.50

3. Casa da Passarella VinhasVelhas Dao Tinto O Oenologo (14.5%; http://www.CasaDaPassarella.Pt) PauloNunes/O Abrigo da Passarella/Gouvaia/Portugal 2010: Very dark color; very ripe grapey/plummy Grenache/Mourvedre-like some earthy/dusty/OV rather overripe/Paso-like nose; soft/fat/porky very ripe/overripe/grapey/plummy/Paso-like jammy some dusty/OV flavor w/ light soft/ripe/tannins; med.long very ripe/overripe/plummy/grapey some dusty/OV rather soft/fat some alcoholic/fumey finish w/ light ripe/soft tannins; a soft/fat/porky rather overripe/jammy if somewhat interesting red. $25.00 (AV)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Carlisle: I'd had several Carlisle PS's over the last few weeks that had matured quite well. When I looked at the alcohol level, I suspected it was one that had not done well. It had not.

2. Passarella: This wines comes from an 80 yr old vnyd, containing Baga/Touriga Nacional/Alvarelhão/Tinta Pinheira/Jaen/Alfrocheiro/Tinta Carvalha/etc. Fermented in concrete vats w/ pre & post-fermentation maceration. It was mildly interesting and an oddity but pretty overripe.

Tom, I wonder if the VT White isn't in one of those phases that white wines from the Rhone go through, of seeming oxidized and beyond the pale, when perhaps they're just asleep and need to be left to rest a bit longer, i.e., the "dumb" phase?
I don't know just how I'm supposed to play this scene, but I ain't afraid to learn...

Yup, Steve...could very well be. But it just seemed pretty oxidized to me at this point in time. Probably won't bother
to try another one. Not when I can get a full btl of Heart of Gold at the same price.

Zero reason for it to be dead, unless damaged or a compromised cork.

Pretty much my thoughts too, David. The cork seemed to be in fine condition, though.
Perhaps heat damage along the way? But it was definitely on the oxidized side.
