Tom's reminiscences about Donn Reisen reminded me that we had a lone remaining bottle of the Ridge 1999 Dry Creek Valley Syrah, Lytton Estate, which I think was part of an ATP shipment from our very first year in the club... so we opened it this week. You'd never have known it was approaching its third decade: still saturated purple, dominated by fresh blackberry liqueur, accented with licorice and cocoa. Not a small wine, but also not heavy at all -- to the contrary, it was lively and vibrant, and brought sunshine to a cloudy day. I parted with some Ridge Syrahs and Syrah/Grenache blends, but kept a handful, too (especially the ones with comparatively lower alcohols), and this sure makes me glad I did.
