WTN: Bérêche rosé

by Patchen Markell » Mon Jan 01, 2018 11:48 am

Bérêche et Fils NV Champagne, "Campania Remensis." The back label appears to indicate this is from a 2012 base, disgorged March 2016; I think it's a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Light brassy pink color, delicate mousse. Really bright and vibrant, with a mixture of herbaceous red fruit, yeast, and minerality. Remarkable for the length of the palate. Quite delicious!

We drank this (from standard white wine stems, not flutes) before dinner, with some cheese (including the Humboldt Fog "Purple Haze," which swaps out the ash layer for a layer of lavender and fennel pollen, and will make the heart sing of anyone who has spent time on a California hillside), and during a simple dinner for two: roast butterflied chicken with rosemary, lemon, garlic, and peperoncini; celeriac-potato puree; and a green salad with pears.

Happy New Year to all!
cheers, Patchen

At first, I thought I might go out in search of a winter truffle; you know, for a little bit of haut-bourgeois luxury to ring in the new year. But the more I thought about it, the more I thought that a really good roast chicken was luxury enough, especially if I didn't screw it up -- and, luckily, I didn't!

This was my first Bérêche; I'm pretty impressed. I've got a couple more of the NV Réserve, which I think is the 1/3 Chardonnay, 1/3 Pinot Noir, 1/3 Meunier blend (?). After Jenise's thread about Meunier I'd like to try their 100% Meunier cuvée too (I think I have a Laherte Rosé de Meunier on deck next).
cheers, Patchen

Also if you like Meunier, go in search of Moussé Fils.
