WTN: Pre-40th birthday wines (Pol Roger, Ridge, Beringer)

by David M. Bueker » Sun Jan 21, 2007 12:14 pm

My folks were up for the weekend in advance of my 40th borthday on Monday the 22nd. We did some damage on Thursday and Friday, but last night was the main event.

We started with a simple sparkler...

1985 Pol Roger Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill
Deep gold in color, this looked fully mature, but really it isn't, though it is in a truly great place right now. Baked apple eventually gives was to more citrusy/bright aromas and flavors. It's very mouthfilling, and even two hours later towards the end of dinner it's still gaining weight and complexity. Wonderful Champagne.

With steaks we had two contrasting California Cabernets.

Ridge Estate Cabernet Sauvignon NV
This was a blend of the '66 and '71 vintages of Monte Bello Cabernet fruit bottled in 1972 according to the label. Initially quite acidic, with the food it calmed down and showed that it had plenty of fruit and tannin. The black cherry and cassis fruit was balanced with cedar on the finish and supported by smooth but noticeable tannins. Surprisingly young for a 35/40 year old blend.

1995 Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
I was interested to try this because of the GJE results, and it did not disappoint. Smooth and supple (less tannin than the Ridge), it was plummy and mouthfilling; very easy to drink. I'm a fan of the 1995 vintage, actually more so than '94, and have been enjoying the wines from that year quite a bit lately. This Beringer showed the same seetness of fruit and balanced structure that I had previously seen in the Insignia and Arrowood Reserve. Excellent wine.

t-minus 1 day to go...although since the big day is a Monday, celebrations will be subdued/postponed.

Happy Birthday David! What, no riesling? Looks like a nice celebration.

Go Colts! The Ravens are the most hypocritical team in all of sports! (Of course it's always hard to root against Tom Brady.)
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows
That too many people have died?

Go Saints!

I enjoy watching the Patriots, but have never been a fan despite living in New England most of my life.

Neither the Colts nor the Ravens have much to be proud of in terms of loyalty to their cities.

Happy Birthday! But simple sparkler? I've never had an older Sir Winston, but if the young ones (1993 & 95) are anything to go by, simple isn't what I'd call them! ;)

See if you can find a bottle of 1967 Moselblumchen for tomorrow.

Had my obligatory '67 on 12/22 with Beth Sheligo. It was a Rudesheimer Berg Schlossberg Spatlese from a producer I have never heard of. It was however quite good.

You know, the fact that they loss doesn't bother me half as much as how many freaking commercials we're going to have to stomach featuring Peyton's goofy mug next year.

Happy birthday! I'm interested in your note on the Beringer as I have a few bottles of this left. I haven't tried this in about 2 years or so. Do you think it still has a long life ahead of it or should I start drinking up my stash? Thanks.

Plenty of life left in the Beringer, but I see no reason to wait. It's truly delicious now.

Happy Birthday, and I too was initially surprised to see no Germans on your list, but now I see you have properly spread out the fesivities over several days and several wine itineraries..

Unfortunately Germans did not fit with the food. I have yet to run across a Riesling that paired with steak, or lasagne for that matter - last Friday's dinner. A 2001 Giacosa Barbera was however perfect with the lasagne, and worth several times its original price for the way it enhanced the sauce and the meal.

Happy Birthday, David! Same date as my father-in-law. I thought our NV Roederer Brut Premier and '88 Haut Marbuzet with roasted duck were delicious, but you certainly do it up right!

All the best,
Michael

Thanks Michael. I try. Though tonight, on my real birthday, I am having a half bottle of leftover AP Vin Pinot Noir and some re-heated lasagna. It's sort of appropriate that a 40th birthday fall on a Monday.
