WTN: Deliver us from Evel

Real Companhia Velha 2001 Douro Evel, $9
Pleasant nose of plum, earth and some barnyard. On the palate, there is good plum and red berry fruit accented by earth, herbs and spices. Lighter-bodied than I would have thought from the nose, but not to its detriment, this has bright acidity, smooth texture, some structure and good balance. Very enjoyable food wine and an excellent match with leftover turkey and garlic mashed potatoes.

Quinta do Cotto 1997 Douro Tinto, $13
Very rich red and black fruit aromas accented by smoke and earth. The palate follows with intense red and black fruit, earth, smoke and some oak. It’s extracted and the oak is noticeable, but there is enough balance, acidity and earthiness to keep it enjoyable. Some significant tannins are present, too, which suggests aging my remaining bottles, though it’s fine for drinking now. Excellent match with takeout Peruvian rotisserie chicken. Importer: World Shippers.

Glad you think so -- I'm certainly inclined to agree. I bought several bottles of this wine more than six years ago; this is the first one I opened and it tasted like the others could stand several more years at least. Quite remarkable for a $13 wine, though it's amazing how many cheap Portuguese reds improve with a decade or more under their belts.

Well, Cotto is one of the best traditional producers (IMO) in the country. A 1990 tasted at MoCool a few years back was one of the wines of the day. Their G. Escolha is fantastic.

Best,
Joe
