WTN: Bodega Del Fin Del Mundo Malbec 2004

by Bruce Hayes » Mon Jan 15, 2007 8:06 pm

From the Patagonia region of Argentina.

Very dark purple, almost black, in the glass.

Lovely nose of sweet, freshly crushed berries and smoke.

Very rich and full, fleshy berry and plums, smoky, good acidity to keep it mouthwatering, clean and taut.

Long, smoky berry finish.

Tremendous QPR at $12.95 (Canadian).

Bruce, thanks for the notes. I have to say that they have sparked my curiosity, since Ive been rather critical of all the Fin del Mundo wines. Perhaps I need to re-taste them.

Ive been especially put off by what I call a "stiletto nose", or that initial harsh & unbalanced nose that many less expensive young wines tend to have.

Dont know if they are available in Canada, but one winery from Patagonia that I favor over Fin del Mundo is Schroeder. Im not crazy about their reds (although their Merlots are promising) but their Sauvignon Blanc is very interesting and a good value.
