Tuscan wine lovers around here?

by francesco.maramai » Sat Apr 08, 2017 8:34 am

Hello,
I am new here, my name is Francesco and I run my family restaurant in Montepulciano, in the heart of Tuscany. I am a licensed sommelier and have many clients from the Usa as we yearly ship thousands bottles of Brunello di Montalcino ( BIondi Santi, Poggio di sotto, Casanova di neri, Caparzo, Le Ripi, Mastrojanni, Il Marroneto, Campogiovanni, Fornacella, Terre Nere, Tricerchi and many others) of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano ( Boscarelli, Avignonesi, Il Macchione, Poliziano, Contucci, Valdipiatta, Villa Sant'anna and many others), Chianti (Felsina, Fontodi, Querciabella, San Felice etc), Bolgheri ( Grattamacco, DI Vaira, Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Masseto etc)
So, I am hereby asking what you think about Tuscan wines in general as I'd like to get feedbacks from wine lovers out there on Vino Nobile di Montepulciano( my hometown), Brunello di MOntalcino, Chianti and Bolgheri

for further information I am also available on perbaccomontepulciano@gmail.com and www.perbaccomontepulciano.com

nice to meet you guys

Francesco :D

I enjoy some Italian wines--both whites and reds but buy more French and German wines. My favorite Super Tuscan is Antinori's Tignanello. I also like some of the wines from Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona and Felsina among others.

Hi, well Tignanello is becoming more and more requested in the last years! Antinori's wines they are technically perfect but to be honest all of their wines taste the same to me(except the Tignanello which I recognize as great wine even though I am more into smaller producers and more hearthy wines). I know very well Ciacci as I am good friends with the family that runs the winery and I have been selling Felsina for long time. I guess you have good taste in Tuscan wines
I am a bit more focused on small wineries, there is one not far from Ciacci in Montalcino that makes some amazing wines called Podere Le Ripi; it's not easy to find it in the US so many retailers buy wine from me and they are requesting more and more, I am happy to give my contribution to this small wineries and to get people from abroad familiar with wines that represent our terroir and our tradition :D

Availability of small production wines is always a bit spotty, especially outside of the major cities. Not everyone in the USA lives in New York.

So true, David! I too love Italian wines. My local group did an Open Italy night on Tuesday. Eight tasters, 23 bottles. Great odds! I'll post notes soon.

I'm a big fan of Italian wines. I started with them when I was not yet of legal drinking age, and I find myself returning to them more and more now. I love that there's still a very good range of choices at "affordable" prices, under $20 or even under $15.

Sadly, my favorite Italian wines are not that cheap.

Sadly I don't worry about not buying some of my favorite Italian wines because after consulting an actuary table I know better time wise. :(

Admittedly most (though not all) of my "Italian" wine purchases come from Sam Bilbro/Idlewild these days. It's cheaper than Cappellano!

So I just wanted to bring Francesco's attention to the tasting notes I just posted on Tuesday night's Open Italy night. An impressive variety when you consider our remote Pacific Northwest location, I think.

I like Sangiovese, but my buying has shifted around.

I don't drink much Vino Nobile di M, just because other than Avignonesi (who I used to like, but found a little disappointing in last decade) I don't really know producers.

I buy less Brunello now, pricing for ones I like has gotten expensive (Soldera used to be affordable, I have 2 bottles left, a 98 and a 00 Riserva, if I looked at auction value I'd never drink).

Most of my Chianti buying is Felsina , with some Fontodi, Lecci e Brocchi, Montesecondo, etc. I used to buy Montevertine, but the owner decided the world needed to know his personal views, so no more.

Happy to drink someone else's Sassacaia but I don't usually buy any Bolgheri.

Always happy for new suggestions, mostly interested in Sangiovese wines that aren't too oaky.

Tuscany is one of my great loves in wine, and Brunello is my favorite of all red wines. Also a big fan of Morello and Super Tuscans. I haven't had as much experience with Vino Nobile as I would like. But in general, I enjoy any Tuscan red.
