WTN: AntonioMadeira Dao '12...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Apr 05, 2017 10:45 am

Tried this w/ John on Sunday:
1. AntonioMadeira DOP: Dao VinhasVelhas Serra do Estrela (12.5%; JosePastorSlctns) SantaMarinha/Portugal 2012: Med.color; rather earthy/dusty/loamy/chalky light grapey/herbal/stony bit quotidian nose; soft some sour/earthy/loamy/metallic light grapey/herbal/plummy rather coarse/clumsy flavor w/ light spiky/bitey tannins; med.short soft bit tangy/metallic fairly earthy/loamy light grapey/herbal finish w/ light bitey tannins; a rather coarse/oafish/dull/rustic peasant Portugese red w/ little redeeming qualities; way overpriced at $34.00 (AV)

1. AntonioMadeira is a Frenchman w/ Portugese roots who returned to Portugal, purchased an abandoned vnyd of old Portugese varieties in 2010, and started making wine using "natural" techniques. The wine showed no funkiness or defects you sometimes find in "natural" wines...just a boring/thourghly undistinguished red.

I'm surprised to see this is available in the US, because the quantities are tiny. Antonio's wines are getting good reviews in the Portuguese press, for instance it get 17-17.5/20 from a major Portuguese magazine: http://www.revistadevinhos.pt/vinhos/sh ... &idioma=pt . I generally enjoy a good Dao wine and was looking forward to tasting this, but based on your note, maybe I'm not missing much. He appears to be taking pricing tips from Dirk Niepoort....
