WTN: Once and Future Mataro

by Patchen Markell » Tue Mar 28, 2017 9:28 pm

Once & Future Wines 2015 Contra Costa County Mataro, Oakley Road Vineyard. 14.01% ABV, $35.00. The initial taste of this wine shows fairly prominent wood spice, but within about fifteen minutes, the wood impression recedes behind increasingly expressive fruit. Medium-bodied, dried cherry and a whole rack of hilside herbs, some licorice and tar too, but these darker notes are recessive. The whole wine is carried along by bright acids. Somehow both elegant and rustic at the same time. This is a lovely, evocative bottle that seems likely to develop very positively for several years. (My only complaint is that the Once and Future website includes some nonsense about Contra Costa being called "CoCo" for short. Meh.)
cheers, Patchen

Awww, Patchen. Residents of "Chi-town" shouldn't worry about nicknames of suburban counties!

Thanks for the early peek. I am about ready to open one here at the Schloss.

CoCo?

CoCo Crisp?

CoCo Chanel?

CoCo Puffs?

Having lived in Contra Costa County for about twelve years, I have a high ρ to CoCo.

(I wasn't posting on the WLDG back then, though, cause I was young and baroque.)
cheers, Patchen
