NYTimes: Asimov Recommends 12 Grapes Worth Discovering

by TomHill » Sun Mar 26, 2017 9:07 pm

Article in the NYTimes by Eric on 12 grape varieties worth discovering:
NYTimes:12Grapes

Blatterle is the only one that's new to me. He recommends Trollinger from the Wurttemberg of Germany. I would suggest that the Vernatschs from the SudTirol/AA are much more interesting. Least the ones I've tried.

Aren't Vernatsch and Trollinger the same?
I don't know just how I'm supposed to play this scene, but I ain't afraid to learn...

Nope, David....not knockin' Wurttenburg. I don't see a whole lot of Baden wines, so don't
get to try many. I've had maybe 6-7 Trollingers...all of which underwhelmed me...they didn't
taste like a Carlisle!!

While it is nice to see an article pointing out the virtues of some more obscure grapes, one could probably assemble a similarly decent list by random selection from Jancis Robinson's book. The key is what some of the smaller, high quality producers have done to bring up the quality of some of these varieties (e.g. Carignan, which isn't exactly rare) plus the importers which see a market in bringing these wines to the US. Unfortunately, for many outside of markets like NYC, one probably has little chance of finding some of these wines.

NYT won't allow me access to this article. Such is my interest in American politics at present that I have already exceeded my monthly allowance of free articles!!

If you wait until start of April, you should be able to access it.
As for "American politics", you should break that addiction...it's nothing but ugly!!

Does your browser have "incognito mode"? ;)

Thanks for that tip, David. I hope that it's going to open up access to lots of articles from which I get barred at present. I'll also investigate the "incognito mode".

Azimov falls into the trap of confusing Cornalin Valle d'Aosta (AKA Humagne in Valais) with Cornalin proper, the Valaisan grape, which is different from Cornalin Valle d'Aosta/Humagne. Cornalin proper produces great wine in Valais. I still have one bottle left of a 2004 from Denis Mercier. I'm surprised that Azimov, whom I consider a serious wine writer, appears not to know that.

We visited Nusserhof while in Bolzano several years ago. The vineyard and winery are located in a heavily urbanized area surrounded on all sides by a major road, industry and development. Despite having no reservation, Mrs. Mayr received us graciously and showed us around. Their Blatterle was wonderful. We bought several bottles and wished we had room for more. We also bought a couple of bottles of Teroldego. Arriving home we discovered that one had broken. Everything in in the suitcase was red. What a mess.
