WTN: Carlisle Zin OldVines '13...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Tue Mar 14, 2017 11:48 am

Tried this last night from my Carlisle stash:
1. Carlisle Zin OldVines RRV (15.7%; Plntd: 1881-1895; + mixed blacks; 650 cs) 2013: Med.dark color; lovely very strong blackberry/boysenberry/Zin/very spicy quite dusty/OV earthy light toasty/oak rather complex OVZin nose; lightly tart very strong blackberry/Zin/boysenberry/very spicy light toasty/smokey/oak very dusty/OV fairly structured flavor w/ light smooth/ripe tannins; very long/lingering slightly tart very strong blackberry/boysenberry/Zin/ripe/slight peppery/very spicy quite dusty/OV finish w/ modest ripe tannins; carries the alcohol very well and no signs of overripe or raisened character; speaks strongly of Carlisle and OVZin; not particularly distinctive but a beautiful Zin at a stupid/silly price. $26.25

Tom - a question for your learned palate: how would you compare/contrast the Carlisle style versus Bedrock?

Hmmmmm...good question, David. Not sure I have a good answer but, being a LosAlamos guy...I'll make something up.
Maybe after tonight's tasting..I'll have a better idea.

I lump Bedrock/Carlisle/LimerickLane together in style. The LL's are generally bigger/riper than the other two.
Often a bit over the top, perhaps..but not as bad as some of that genre. The Bedrocks tend to be the more restrained
of that three, a bit more reined in and not as ripe, maybe a bit more expressive of the vnyd source. A bit more old-timey.
The Carlisles lie in the middle. A bit riper than the Bedrocks, perhaps, though also expressive of their vnyd source.
Maybe the Carlisles are more expressive of a particular winemaking style...Mike's style..more identifiable as Carlisle.
Generalizations, of course. And, of course, we know that Carlisle makes world-class Gruner!!
