As a lover of the Saar, I was excited to see some wines from Vols available in my post-Taureau wine desert. I've read the praise and it seems like I should like the wines. Unfortunately these two bottles did not convince.
After opening the 2015 Vols Wiltinger Kupp Kabinett I had to double-check the label and make sure it was a 2015. Crunchy salty and some evidence of 'ripe' pillowy 2015 fruit, but much smaller scaled and more outright sour than the 2015 kabinetts I've had from Falkenstein and Lauer. Maybe that initial burst of fruit has receded and it's now in an inbetween period. Admittedly a 2015 Falkenstein kabinett from a few weeks ago was nowhere near as fun as last summer. Regardless, this leaned a bit too much towards boring and did not inspire.
The 2013 Vols Vols I Spätlese was more giving, smells and tastes like straightforward typical golden-leaning riesling stalk, a bit juicy, a bit tangy, more weight and more interest than the 2015 kabinett. But, more correct than interesting.
Obviously I can't claim to know the producer after these two bottles. But I was hoping for more.
