Ian d'Agata Interview

by TomHill » Wed Mar 08, 2017 10:19 am

A rather interesting interview of Ian d'Agata by Emily O'Hare:
d'AgataInterview .

I particularly noted his comment:
Ian wrote:Their future needs protecting! I owe it to them to make sure that some overly creative or ultra cool hipster producer doesn’t turn them into a joke or into something they never were. Ribolla Gialla, which is now being made as a white, pink, orange, macerated, still, sparkling and amphora-aged wine, is case in point. They have thrown everything but the kitchen sink at that poor grape.

with which I take issue. Sparkling RG has been around in Friuli for quite a long time, I think. The same could also be said PinotGrigio. I find all these renditions of RG fascinating and am all for them. But then, being an "ultra cool hipster", that's to be expected!! :-)

I don't know, I like winemakers trying different things, and don't think RG has suffered from it.
and it's BS to list those as independent things. Gravner's RG (the most prominent wine to suffer from being called "hipster") is orange still macerated amphora. Probably 90+% of RG production is white still.
I don't drink a lot of orange wine but it's ridiculous to say one needs to defend against it.

I'm with Dale and Tom on this. Whatever style of Ribolla you like (or any other "native" variety), I don't see how hipsters with amphorae are the threat -- as opposed to, say, being ripped out in favor of Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc.
cheers, Patchen

Replacing Ribolla might be an improvement.
