WTN: Two Sucky Zins...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Mar 06, 2017 2:03 pm

Tried these two over the weekend:
1. DryCreekVnyds Zin HeritageVines SonomaCnty (Vine age: 20+ yrs; 20% PetiteSirah/1% Primitivo/1% Carignane; 14.5%) 2014: Med.dark color; some vanilla/Am.oak bright blackberry/raspberry/Zin fairly spicy light earthy/meaty slight aged nose; rather tart/lean quite raspberry/blackberry/Zin/DryCreekVlly some vanilla/Am.oak rather hard/harsh/tannic bit austere flavor w/ ample hard/angular tannins; med.long rather blackberry/raspberry/Zin/spicy fairly tart/rather sour some Am.oak/vanilla finish w/ ample hard/unyielding/rough tannins; a very attractive DCVlly nose but has become very hard/rough on the palate; lost the lush/ripe/uncutuous character it had a yr ago; disappointing. $13.00 (KK)

2. Ridge Zin Calif PaganiRanch LatePicked SonomaVlly (7% AlicanteBouschet/4% PetiteSirah; 15.8%; bttld 1/04; 20% new oak; SaH: 27.4%; RS: 0.2%; Drk: 12/03-12/08-12/10: PD) 2002: Dark color w/ slight bricking; rather pencilly/cedary/oldZin/licorice fairly dusty/OV bit tired some complex some overripe/raisened/alcoholic nose; soft rich/lush very licorice/overripe/raisened/pruney quite dusty/OV some vanilla/Ridge oak some blackberry/boysenberry/Zin rather hot/alcoholic/pruney bit tangy/metallic flavor w/ light ripe/smooth tannins; very long very overripe/pruney/raisened/pruney quite hot/alcoholic drying out strong licorice/boysenberry/blackberry/Zin/spicy quite dusty/OV complex finish w/ modest ripe/smooth tannins; some interesting things therein but the overripe/pruney character has become pronounced; drying out & headed downhill like a 400# Texan on Al'sRun at Taos, about to crash & burn.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. I opened the Ridge w/ low expectations and it pretty much delivered on those expectations. But I was a bit shocked at the Heritage Zin. A yr ago, it was a beautiful/classic DCV Zin. This time it was quite hard/harsh on the palate. The fruit was there, but not very attractive on the palate. No idea what happened or if it's just going thru a phase. The new '15 I had a month or so ago was absolutely delicious.

Thanks for taking one for the team, Tom..Will look for the 2015 DCV Heritage zin and avoid the 2014..

I tried a new Pagani Ranch (2013?) and I actively disliked it. One of the worst wines of the year!

I almost tasted sugar...as in granular, gritty sugar! Maybe as an ice cream sauce, but as a wine?

The last Ridge Pagani was the 2014 released last Fall. I've not tried it yet. Maybe I will tonight
if the Mazzono '11 fails to deliver.

Cool. Maybe I tasted from a bad bottle is the problem?

Look forward to your notes.
