WTN: Odds n Sods

From the last, oh I don't know, while or go:

Dom. de la Pepiere, Muscadet Sevre et Maine, 'Monnieres-Saint Fiacre', 2013
12% Fresh linden-lime blossom with alfalfa, but little of the salinity you find in Pepiere's other cuvees. Good.

Ganevat, Cotes du Jura, 'les Chalasses Vieilles Vignes', 2010
13.5% Hay and grass seed, biscuit on the nose. A little oxidative. Interestingly spicy, something sort of like cumin, with good, lifting acidity. Mmmm...

Descendientes de J. Palacios, Bierzo, 'Villa de Corullon', 2011
15% Smokey, but rather mute nose. A bit of sour Italian plum, fresh fig paste on the palate, a bit dull and without much complexity, plodding after awhile. Would not seek out again.

Famille Peillot, Roussette du Bugey-Montagnieu, Altesse, 2013
12.5% Lemony minty oregano nose, with pear. Salty canned pears with a demi-sec chenin-like sweetness, with stony mountain water. Has the weird feeling of being thin in flavor but then has a weight going down. Not sure if there is a word for that or not. Interesting and refreshing. Color a pretty dull gold with a slight pinkish-walnut cast. Would seek more.

Chateau Rieussec, Sauternes, 2001
13.5% Such a classic year, and this doesn't disappoint. Burnt gold in color. Very strong botrytis aromas: burnt sugar and orange-peach marmalade, ripe fresh figs, and of course, SUGAR on the finish. Acidity not very pronounced here, but the concentration is fantastic. Let's give this 95 points.

Paolo Bea, Montefalco Rosso Riserva, 'Pipparello', 2008
14.5% Quite deep in color. Whiff of volatile acidity, which doesn't show in the too in the mouth. Nice nose of cardamom soaked mulberries, dark plums, and still showing quite tannic (which the 2005, 2006 versions did not). Quite impressive. Power, while toying with brett, but this thing needs MEAT. Hold for another 3-5 years. [60% sangio - 25% montepulciano - 15% sagrantino] Hell yeah!

Jean-Claude Bessin, Chablis, 'La Fourchaume', 2011
13% Lemon cream, little bit of duck fat, softish acidity and a talc finish. Feels like a soft spring rain falling down. Medium in weight. Merely 'good', but that's good enough.

Luis Pato, Beiras, 'Quinta do Moinho', 2001
13.5% A dark, musty, maroonish red. Warm compote and brooding spices on the nose. Mulled wine flavors, with cherrywood & bark on the palate. There's a slight floral quality buried somewhere in all the thick, deep fruit. Still young and savory, still a tannic beast with a lot of grip at the end. Perhaps it needs lamb? Try again in 3-4 years. Like the beautiful mustang horse you saw running wild in Wyoming: you want to tame and possess it.

Zanetta Segioe Valter, Gattinara, 'Monsecco', 2006
13.5% Old nebbiolo color (duh-uh). Picnic flowers for a nose. Mild stringy tannins, some straw and that florality again. On the 2nd day, a sternness shows, along with spices like cinnamon and allspice on the finish. Perhaps too early?

That Bugey sounds fantastic. Not likely to see it here but will put it on my shopping list--you never know.

Good to read about the Rieussec. That '01 is one of the best Sauternes I've had and I drank my one bottle early on (not meaning TOO early--it was plenty spectacular, and perhaps benefitted for my tastes because the botrytis isn't as apparent in the junior specimens). Still, I'd intended to grab another vintage I have a lot of, so it was a verifiable booboo.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
