I was worried that this might be pushing the aging envelope, but our last bottle of Porter Creek 2003 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, "Hillside Vineyard," Old Vines, is going out in a flash of brilliance. A dark, earthy, very mildly funky opening, laced with cocoa, opens out into a surprisingly concentrated beam of silken black-cherry fruit, finishing with a complex chord of iron and cola. Everything's in harmony and well-developed but not even close to tired. One of the most beautiful mature California Pinots I've ever had the pleasure to taste.
cheers, Patchen
