WTN: Anden we had this

by Jenise » Mon Feb 13, 2017 9:46 am

2005 St. Innocent Anden Vineyard Pinot Noir
Drank this bottle over two hours and it never entirely relaxed. Great pinot nose but reserved on the palate with little in the way of mature pinot flavors. Either drying up or in a dormant phase--I bet on the latter. HOLD.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

hmmm.. I have not had this wine in almost 10 years. Back then I was not crazy about it. I have left my other bottle hoping something would emerge. :(

On the other hand, the 2004 Anden I drank last year, was the best Anden I have ever tasted.

I too loved the 04 Anden. I don't recall anything about earlier bottles of the 05, but I would have had some (would not have bought just one). Any recent experience with the 05 Seven Springs? When doing a physical inventory yesterday, I found I had four more of those and a single '00, all of which I thought were gone.

You made me check, and .... here were my previous thoughts. One is the Special Selection.

  • 2005 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Seven Springs Vineyard - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley (6/24/2009)
This is 7 Springs done right. Smells wonderful straight out of the bottle. The fruit is complimented by the dusty earthy quality. I had this over 2 days and the aromatics stayed beautiful. At times I thought brute strength but a moment later I thought elegance. Still young on the palate but not angular like some renditions of this wine. Refreshing acidity held up perfectly for 2 days. This may be my favorite 7 Springs. Time will tell.
    (94 pts.)

Wow. Not a great note but this is an awesome wine from a great vintage. It is dark and fairly extracted. There are floral elements through out but this is far from a fragile flower. A brooding wine. Still a baby. Too bad the vineyard is now a monopole. It was nice to get different interpretations. (94 pts.)

Cheers,

So not since 2009--do you have any more? I'll open one of my four soon. Meant to last night, it was just an accident that I grabbed the only Anden instead.

And speaking of the monopole, I recently bought Evening Land's Grand Cru Clos Vougeot. It was being closed out at $35 per bottle--figured it had to be at least decent.

Yeah, I have 3 of the 7 Springs left. I neeeeeed! to dig one out. I haven't tried any Evening Land as of yet.

On another note, Walter Scott is now getting 7 Springs fruit. I think the vineyard has been expanded so I can't speak to the quality of the property but Walter Scott is making terrific wines. Their Chardonnays might become one of the tops in the valley.

I used to drink a fair amount of St Innocent, but not in a while. Need to revisit

I like the way his style has evolved.

Jason, I re-used the Anden cork tonight to seal an '82 Rioja whose cork was no longer viable, and that got into a discussion at the tasting I was at--did Anden go to Evening Land with the Seven Springs sale? I thought so, but more or less because I haven't seen the name since--made me realize I didn't actually know.

Anden was the original block of Seven Springs IIRC. When the couple divorced, they split the vineyard by the road that went down the middle. A move I never understood because 7 Springs was arguably the most sought-after vineyard in the valley. Only Russ Raney from Evesham Wood was allowed to use the 7 Springs name on what was actually the Anden block.

So, yes, the Anden block just went back to being called 7 Springs. I think the expanded the vineyard as well. Not positive on that one.
