2001 Müller-Catoir Haardter Mandelring Scheurebe Spätlese - Germany, Pfalz (2/11/2017)
As someone else recently said, this is now more grapefruit and minty sage than mango. It still has about perfect balance, and great length. This was the last of the great Scheurebe wines from Hans Gunter Schwarz. Nobody ever came close to what he did with the grape.

Darting has come close and even equaled on Rieslaner a few times. The 2001 Darting Rieslaner Auslese was an amazing achievement.

I was planning to open, soon, a 2002 M-C Rieslaner BA (Gimmeldinger Schlössel), in 375, bought on a lark at a ridiculously low clearance price long ago. Where should I set my expectations?
cheers, Patchen

Moderate. 2002 was a transition year for Catoir. Schwarz had left, but their initial replacement did not do so well. Franzen, who is good but not HGS, came later.

Andreas Laible makes great Scheurbe, from the little I've tasted, but almost impossible to find.

Thanks, David -- at $4.00 for the bottle, "moderate" is fine!

Yeah, I had some of those HGS Scheurebes too. Wonderful wines.
