WTN: 2009 Laurel Glen Cabernet Sauvignon

by Jim Grow » Sat Feb 11, 2017 8:15 pm

My first Laurel Glen and that is WAY too bad. This wine, very dark black in color, had a very nice nose of eucalyptus and black current. The palate followed and the balance was perfect. I could drink this all nite long. I have two more bottles , all bought on good discount for $32 (remember I'm buying in Ohio) and glad I bought all available. Probably not quite at peak but close. Wonderful Sonoma Cabernet. abv of %14.3.

$32 is an insanely good price, and less than I paid for my first bottles from this winery back in the 90's. I've not heard many reports about the wines lately--sounds like whoever's in charge since Patrick died has kept up the quality.

I think he's still with us -- he sold in 2011, but the LG website still lists him as a consultant. Winemaker is Randall Watkins, David Ramey is consulting winemarker, Phil Coturri is viticulturalist.
cheers, Patchen

Jenise, wine auctions in Europe specialized in expensive premium wines might be the best place to buy Laurel Glen Cabernet at prices even lower than insane. - In 2014 I picked at such an auction a case of Laurel Glen Cabernet from 1999 at USD 27 per bottle because nobody else wanted it. - I have enjoyed all these bottles with friends, everybody loved it.

Rainer, that's an amazing price. Btw, I recall reading a thread a long long time ago on one of the first internet wine boards, wherein someone asked the question, "If California adopted a growth system like Bordeauxs, which would be the First Growths?" Montelena was pretty much everyone's first nominee, but I remember that I'd just tasted my first Laurel Glen and was excited that it also placed high on that list. Today the name wouldn't even register with the Harlan chasers et al--for one, it's only Sonoma, so almost automatically out of the running.

I have a 1999 Verite "La Muse" hidden somewhere that might be high on that list also and from Sonoma Co.
