WTN: 2013 ARBËRI Kallmet (Albanian Red)

by Dan Smothergill » Wed Feb 01, 2017 12:13 pm

Strikingly herbaceous aroma full of hazel nuts. Pleasing velvety smooth, dark cherries taste that disappoints just a bit after the wonderful nose. Nicely balanced. 100% Kallmet, the principal wine grape of Albania. Arbëri is run by the father- son Kaçorri team, the son trained across the Adriatic in Bologna. The winery itself has invested heavily in Italian-made machinery and equipment to make indigenous Albanian wines for the modern world. I paid $16 in Washington, DC.

It was most like a medium bodied Pinot Noir, elegant with gentle tannins. Most of the remarkable nose had dissipated by the second day but the light cherries taste was still there.

Kallmet is known in Hungary as Kadarka where it's a traditional mainstay of Bull's Blood. Can I write off those demerits now?

Fair enough, Dan. I've had Kadarka. You are now demerit-free.
