Brunello Question

by Jim Grow » Sun Jan 29, 2017 1:59 pm

I found a 2005 La Collina dei Lecci Brunello di Montalcino in my off-site cellar. The front label is too moldy to read but has a red V thru the estates crest. Imported by Cutting edge Selections, I can find nothing about this particular vintage. Cost was $30 which seems a bit high compared to wine-searcher prices for other vintages. Is this wine mature, over the hill or somewhere in between?

Jim,

I'm not familiar with the producer, but ten years is not much for a Brunello, at any level of quality.

Agree with Oliver. Even the less expensive Brunelli from a good vintage can easily go 10 - 15 years. Not having any other info I would open it soon, but without much concern.

In my view most of the Brunelli are ready to drink at release and they do not improve significantly with bottle maturity.

We had a delicious 2000 Caparzo last night, Jim. Needed an hour in a decanter to open up and it was better with food than not, but nonetheless the flavors were merely late middle-aged, not completely mature.
