WTN: A Song for Europe

by David M. Bueker » Thu Jan 26, 2017 3:39 pm

2001 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie (1/25/2017)
From a magnum that had been opened 10 hours earlier, this was still tight as a drum when I grabbed my first, small pour. I had the chance to go back to it a couple of times, and about 90 minutes later the fireworks went off. A veil of darkness was pulled back, and all the things one expects from great Cote Rotie were revealed. Smoke, roasted meat, bacon fat, floral tones and a deep, dark berry and olive base all swirled through the aromas and carried through onto a bright, focused palate. The depth was excellent, and indicative of decades more aging potential. That said I was quite content to enjoy it with my lamb chops.

Nice work. I don't have the good fortune to have lots of experience with Jamet, but I posted on a 750ml of the 2001 that I drank this summer with PAB in Paris. It was opened before service and I don't know how long it received air, but surely not 10 hours, and it showed pretty darn well.

Little did I know it would be the last time I ever drank with him..

Thanks for the TN, David. Jamet is one of my favourite producers. I've just checked CT and find that I have three bottles of the 2001 but will leave them a bit longer before opening them. Luckily I have some bottles of the three preceding vintages as well as one each of 96 and 95 (Côte Brune). I noticed that CT values the last at >$300  . I would have preferred not to know that :!:

I saw what had happened to pricing. Crazy.

It's a delicious wine, but it's not that delicious!
