Carbon Fiber Corkscrew

by Jenise » Sun Jan 22, 2017 1:18 pm

With a lifetime guarantee! Will admit to watching the video with some amusement. Every corkscrew we've had to throw away, and those have been many, failed because the hinge-y part that holds the worm in fails--bends, or comes loose. It's never the handle or the lever. This guy makes no case for why that part isn't going to be the problem again.

Who's convinced?

Maybe I need to drink more wine, but I have never had a corkscrew fail. I have several I don't use much because I don't like them, but the one I use most is a simple $10 waiter's type that I picked up at a winery tasting room. Carbon fiber is all the rage in cycling, but even there, where lightness is a factor, it is being oversold. I think some of the 'brands' (I hesitate to use the word 'manufacturer') like being able to contract with someone in Taiwan/China to make a fancy looking product for a couple hundred dollars and then slap on a much higher price tag because it has a famous name.

I agree, Jenise. It makes me sad to use my beautiful Italian Archimedes corkscrew now because the style is so great but the helix so wobbly. :( I actually like the looks of that carbon-steel corkscrew, but for $70, nuh-uh.

Can someone explain why I should want a particularly light cork screw? Are Sommeliers not getting around restaurants fast enough because they are being weighed down?

Tip for cheap waiter's friend corkscrew: If the rivety thing holding the screw starts to slip out, it is possible to hammer the ends out a bit to keep it in place. With that minor one-off repair, I have now been using one for 20 tears or so.The Teflon is largely worn off, but I would hate to lose it now.

In the case of the LeverPull (made of graphite fibre, I think) or the Rabbit (made of heavy SS), there's a big difference
in weight betwixt the two. You can inflict serious damage on a Sherman tank w/ the Rabbit.
With the waiter's corkscrew, the weight difference is pretty irrelevant, I would think.
