WTN: Bloody well Himmelreich

by David M. Bueker » Fri Jan 13, 2017 10:34 pm

2015 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (1/13/2017)
Tasted over two nights, I think this may be the best young Prüm Kabinett that I have ever tasted (note: I have not yet opened the 2015 WS Kabinett). From right out of the gate it was explosive in aromatics, flavors and inner mouth energy. Bright lemon and orange fruit tones, vivid minerality and a long, weightless but persistent finish made this a complete, if young, wine. Buy it and make sure to buy enough that you can have a few now. While this appears poised for a long life, it has some irresistible charms right now.

I'm beginning to consider getting some 2015s. In addition to JJ Prum, what other estates would you recommend, especially if I'm looking for 20 year potential Kabinetts?

Different style (richer): Schloss Lieser

St. Urbans-Hof (I have not tasted them yet, but have had numerous, old SUH Kabinetts, and they are always very fine.)

Egon Muller (pricey)

Willi Schaefer

That's a start.

Thanks David!

So, is 2015 in fact the new 2001?

I think 2015 is richer and a bit less 'regal', which was always the word that came to mind in terms of the 2001 structure.

But there are tons of great wines from all these years, and yes, those who loved 2001 will probably also love 2015. Enjoy the bounty!

I have not had enough '15s to make a final judgement, but I prefer the balance of 2001. It's a bit leaner, and shows more consistent vibrancy. A few 2015 wines have shown that inner mouth energy that made 2001 so exciting, but not many.

Thanks guys. Has any vintage since had the same energy that 2001 had?

To me, some of the very best examples from 1996 deliver tons of energy, e.g.:
1996 Weingut Robert Weil Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese,
1996 Weingut Robert Weil Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Auction,
1996 Schloss Lieser Niederberg Helden Riesling Auslese ***,
and, possibly the best Riesling produced ever:
1996 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Eiswein Lange Goldkapsel Auction.

Cheers, Rainer

Ryan,

Raw energy, yes, 2010. Energy with balance, no.

David et al., can I get your opinion on this one:
Kruger-Rumpf Riesling Spatlese Binger Scharlachberg 2015

Very attractively priced, with predicted cellar life of 20 years or more (according to WA).

Ryan,

Go for it. Kruger-Rumpf is doing great things these days.

Thanks David!

Forgive my ignorance, but how will a Riesling from Nahe differ from one from Mosel?

Depends on the vineyard and the producer. Kruger-Rumpf tends to make richer wines than you find at most Mosel producers for an equivalent pradikat.
