Cellar Tape

by Bill Spohn » Wed Jan 04, 2017 3:23 pm

Didn't really know where to post this, so put it where the guys with cellars would see it.

I want to mount a bunch of wine box ends and Ronald Searle posters on my walls in the cellar. They don't weigh much individually, and I wanted a double sided tape that will not stain what it is mounted on (some will go on painted walls) as a substitute to driving small nails into the walls and racking so that they would at least theoretically be removable without damaging anything.

There seem to be a lot of products that are semi permanent and will tear off paint if you remove them, and probably a bunch that are temporary mounts that would fail after awhile, but I haven't found a nice compromise - the product pages for 3M etc. seem to leave a lot of questions unanswered.

Figured someone here must have faced this before. Anyone got a good product?

Oh gosh, the 3M product...starts with a C. Let me look it up.

Command. The Command line of products has, in our case, lived up to the promises. I don't know for a fact that they make reels of double sided tape but I'd guess so--after all the hooks etc are built on double-sided tape, said not to harm paint or other surfaces. Might be Scotch and not 3m, but either way: whoever makes Command has the double-sided thing down pat.

Great, thanks - I'll start there.

Wonder if they thought of using this as their theme song.....

We've used them in Fritz, btw. Amazingly strong and so far, 100% durable.

Don't you have Blu-Tack in Canada? Google is your friend.

It will hold cardboard, and possibly wood if you use enough. It is designed not to damage painted walls, but will leave a slight stain. The original is blue, but there is also a white version, which will leave a less noticeable mark on white walls.

That's what I'd like to avoid if possible.

No stains from Command products.

Spent an hour cleaning the label off the case ends I want to mount (dull knife after wetting well) and pulling nails and staples out of them so I can mount them on the ends of my racks. I'll grab some Command strips tomorrow.

Still searching for my collection of vintage Ralph Steadman wine posters - sure hope they didn't get lost in the move!

The only one still available is this one:

I think it might work better in the kitchen than cellar.
